The lava tube cave known as Buri, is situated in Leitahraun-lava field
Buri is probably the most prized of all the Icelandic lava tube caves. Búri was discovered 2005 and that was considered one of the more remarkable discoveries in Speleology in Iceland for the last 5000 years. Buri is over one kilometer long and the width and height is average 10 metres x 10 metres and is 5000 thousand years old. The last 400 metres of the cave are spectacular they are said to be unrivaled by other similar caves anywhere in the world. The innermost section of the cave has the deepest lava pit on earth 17 metres deep, a vertical pit made from a lava fall. The first part (700m) of the cave is very rocky in the shape as tunnel. After the first 700m the floor remains almost completely flat all the way to the lava pit. At winter and spring time the first 100m of the cave has spectacular ice sculpture hanging in the ceiling and on the floor.
